The Royal Wedding : Prince William & Kate Middleton

Prince William is to marry Kate Middleton on Friday 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey, London. The ceremony will take place at 11am. The day has been declared a Royal Bank Holiday. David Cameron welcomed the announcement of the wedding date, which he said would be a "happy and momentous occasion". The timing of the wedding will mean there will be two four-day public holidays, two weekends in succession. The Monday after the wedding, May 2, is already a designated bank holiday; and the previous weekend is Easter, which also has two bank holidays on the Friday and Monday. It is eagerly anticipated that the Royal Wedding will be marked by Street Parties across the UK. Clarence House has confirmed that the Royal Couple will return to Buckingham Palace after a service at Westminster Abbey. The Queen will hold a Wedding Reception for the couple and their guests. Followed by a private dinner dance, for close family and friends, hosted by The Prince of Wales. Kate Middleton will arrive at Westminster Abbey by car. The service, which is to take place at 11am on Friday 29 April, will be conducted by Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury. On their journey from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace, the Royal Couple will pass Parliament Square, Whitehall, Horse Guards Parade and The Mall.

Kate Middleton

“Catherine Elizabeth Middleton” may not be as Royal as Prince William but she was still given every opportunity by her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.

Kate Middleton was born at Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, Berkshire, the first of three children and was raised in Bucklebury, a quiet English village.

Kate’s father, Michael, was an airline officer and her mother, Carole, was a flight attendant, before they founded their own business “Party Pieces”. Kate Middleton’s parents were determined to give Kate the best education possible.

From the age of four to eleven, Kate attended St Andrew’s Prep School in Pangbourne, Berkshire, followed by two years at Downe House in Newbury.

Kate later went on to attend Marlborough College in Wiltshire and St Andrews University in Scotland.

Kate performed well, academically, gaining high grade passes in eleven GCSE and three good A-levels.

Before attending St Andrews University, where she studied History of Art, Kate decided to embark on a gap year travelling around Italy and South America.

Prince William

Prince William is the elder son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. He was born on 21 June 1982 at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London.

Although Prince William came from a privileged background his mother, Princess Diana, aspired for William and his younger brother Harry, to lead as normal a life as possible. Princess Diana did her best to give her children a sense of fun and freedom.

However Prince William’s childhood was affected by some traumatic events.

In 1996, after a period of separation, his parents divorced. The following year, Princess Diana tragically died in a road traffic accident in Paris. William was only 15 years old.

Prince William was given the very best of educations. He attended Wetherby School in London; Ludgrove School in Berkshire; and Eton College, London, where he studied Geography, Biology and History at A – Level.

Before going to St Andrews University in Scotland, where he gained a 2:1 in Geography, William spent a gap year travelling around Chile, Belize and Africa.

He is an avid sportsman, and was chosen to be President of England’s Football Association. He is also the Vice Royal Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union.

Prince William continues to follow in his parents’ footsteps by taking an interest in various charitable causes, particularly in those that help disadvantaged young children and the homeless.

Prince William is currently a Patron of 19 different charitable organisations.

William was introduced to HIV and AIDS related charities, early on his life, by his mother Princess Diana. These early experiences led William to volunteer at a British Red Cross aid distribution centre in 2005.

Relations

Kate and Will’s romance blossomed at University, where they regularly saw each other in lectures and tutorials and around the University Halls.

The couple connected through their love of sport and gap year experiences.

By the time they entered their second year at University, Kate and Will had moved in together, as flatmates, but insisted they were only friends. However the pair soon became closer and started developing feelings for each other. After William graduated from University, he decided to join the Army. This decision put strain on the couple’s relationship, but William was dedicated to Kate, he often wrote handwritten love notes to her, or drove 45 minutes from his base to see her. Kate and Will tried to keep their relationship a secret from the press, but when they were spotted kissing on the slopes of the Casanna Alp whilst on a skiing holiday in Switzerland, in January 2006, they could no longer hide.

Charities

Over 20 ‘little known’ charities will benefit from Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding list guest fund.

The Royal Couple have selected a wide range of charitable causes, many of which have not received Royal support in the past. They have requested that wedding guests and well-wishers donate rather than spend money on a gift.

The majority of the charities chosen are for causes in the UK. Many focus on the youth sector, including Peace Players Belfast, which is a small charity that brings young people from Protestant and Catholic communities together over a game of basketball. William and Kate visited the organisation when they were in Northern Ireland earlier this month.

Service charities also feature strongly and include Combat for Stress and the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund. Three overseas charities have been selected, including the New Zealand Government’s Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

Guests

David and Victoria Beckham are just one of the ‘A’ list celebrity couples who will be attending the Royal Wedding. However Royal Aides report that this will not be a ‘celebrity-filled’ event.

Guests will include people who Prince William has met on official business or encountered through his charity work, as well as family and friends of the Royal Couple. There will also be representatives from foreign Royal Families, Government, Parliament, the Commonwealth and the Armed Forces.

President Obama will not be invited because William is not first in line to the throne and the Royal Wedding is not an official state occasion.

Surprise guest includes Gary Goldsmith, the disgraced Uncle of Kate Middleton, who has been invited to attend the ceremony … and perhaps less surprisingly Sarah Ferguson has not been invited at all.

While over 1,000 guests will attend the ceremony, only 600 guests have been invited by The Queen to a lunchtime Reception at Buckingham Palace, and a mere 300 to the evening dinner hosted by Prince Charles.

The dress code is uniform, morning coat or lounge suit.

Honeymoon

William and Kate are rumoured to be spending part of their honeymoon at Balmoral in

Prince William and Kate Middleton are likely to visit The Queen’s Scottish Estate at Balmoral, before jetting off to another romantic location.

Having met at the University of St Andrews, William and Kate have a particular love of Scotland. As a Royal source revealed “William is based in Wales and they are getting married in England, it was felt that Scotland should be included”.

A honeymoon at the Queen’s Highland home appears to be a Royal tradition. The Queen and Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex … all spent a part of their honeymoons at Balmoral.

Kate’s wedding dress

Kate Middleton has been asked to select a designer for her wedding dress. She is keeping the fashion world on high alert as she decides which designer she will choose.

Newspapers have already started to speculate on the design of the wedding dress. One stylist predicts the dress will be a demure, high necked, hand embroidered, lace couture gown. Another stylist predicts a traditional dress with a modern twist.

Kate will keep the design of her wedding dress a secret until the Royal Wedding day on Friday 29 April 2011. She does not want Prince William to see the dress before the big day.

Golden ticket

Prince William and Kate Middleton have decided to invite 100 lucky “Golden Ticket Winners” to be a part of their Royal Wedding celebrations on Friday 29April 2011.

The Royal Couple have re-created the Roald Dahl classic ’Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ style “Golden Ticket”.

Each of the lucky winners will be invited to attend the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, followed by the wedding reception, which is rumoured will be held at Buckingham Palace.

However there is a catch… because of the high number of World Leaders and Royalty due to attend the wedding, the Golden Ticket winners will only, officially, be allowed to attend, once they have passed a strict security test.

According to The Sun Newspaper “William and Kate wanted the British people involved at a deeper level than simply holding street parties”.

Unlike in the story ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, where the golden tickets were hidden in a limited number of chocolate bars, Royal Wedding Golden Ticket Winners will be selected at random and will only know they have won when they receive their prize through the post.

Prince William and Kate Middleton will choose members of the public, by random selection, to attend their wedding.

3D wedding broadcasting

Broadcasters are discussing the possibility of broadcasting the British Royal Wedding in 3D.

According to the Daily Mail Newspaper, Sky, the BBC and Virgin are in joint discussions about screening the event live from Westminster Abbey in 3D.

The Daily Mail also reports that “Sky TV have pioneered the new 3D technology on the small screen, largely for sporting events, but it is more likely that a terrestrial broadcaster such as the BBC will get full access to footage of the event, in order to cater for the largest possible TV audience.”

To experience the Royal Wedding in 3D in your own home you will need to have the required technology. Alternatively it may be possible to watch the wedding in 3D in other venues, such as pubs, cinemas and big screens, across the country.

New Year Parade

The New Year's Day Parade is an exciting and joyous celebration through the streets of the West End of London which takes place annually on 1 January. It started firstly in 1987. Nearly 25 years on, the New Year’s Day Parade London is the biggest event of its kind in the world, boasts a street-side audience approaching 1/2 a million, receives a huge amount of international media coverage, has a list of Patrons that represent the very highest levels of officialdom, and also enjoys the recognition and support of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Put simply, the event has grown from something that started big to something that is now colossal. It takes about 2 hours 30 minutes for the full parade to pass by.

1st January 2011 will be the 25th Anniversary of the New Year's Day Parade

The Parade starts at 12 Noon on Piccadilly at the junction with

outside the Ritz Hotel and finishes around 3pm at

Dan Kirkby, the communications director for the parade, says it is "vital" for tourism. He said: “We're delighted with the crowd, it's the biggest we've ever had”

More than 10,000 performers representing 20 countries world-wide will assemble for the 2011 Parade.

3 hours of Live Satellite Coverage will be beamed around the world. Major broadcasters such as the BBC, CNN, Fox news, SKY and CBS are expected to cover the event.

The 2011 Parade will be filled with marching bands, cheerleaders, clowns acrobats, balloons and much more!

We know that immigrants coming to another country sometimes formed so called “ethnic neighborhoods”. Nowadays we can find Chinatowns in many cities around the world such as New-York, Paris, Las-Vegas, so in London. There Chinatown is in the Soho territory of the city of Westminster occupying the area around Gerrard Street. The first Chinatown was founded in London in East End. But after the World War the Second chinese cuisine became more popular and a number of Chinese restaurants and cafes appeared in West End of London.

The famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club started here, in Chinatown in the basement № 39. The nowadays Chinatown in London started to form in 1970s. And today it is the territory of Chinese restaurants, cafes, shops and supermarkets with Chinese souvenirs, herbs and newspapers. Usually British Chinese work in Chinatown, but they live in residential compound called Vale Royal House. Only illegal workers can live in Chinatown.

Tower Bridge

London is divided by the river Thames, so it has many bridges. Tower Bridge is one the most visit and famous bridge in London.
It was named so because of its close location to the Tower of London. The bridge consists of two towers with two horizontal walkways tying it at the upper level. It was open in 1894. And now it’s a symbol of Great Britain like Big Ben, the Tower and another historical monuments of UK. Its total length is 244 metres, Longest span is 61 metres. Tower Bridge was designed by Horace Jones.

It closed on 24th, 25th and 26thDecember.
To construct the framework for Towers and Walkways 11,000 tons of steel was used. In 2002 there was opened Tower Bridge Exhibition with emphasis on Walkways views and history of the Bridge. This exhibition uses films, photos and interactives to explain why and how Tower Bridge was built.

Every day more than 40,000 people cross the bridge (motorists, cyclists and pedestrians). Also there is a speed restriction (32 km/h) and weight limit on vehicles (18 tonns) on the bridge.

Trafalgar Square is one of the most beautiful and famous squares in the world. It is situated in London. It has been a central meeting place since the Middle Ages. There is the tall Nelson's Column At the center of the square. It was built to commemorate the victory of Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson over the French fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar on the 21st of October 1805. the column is 52 meters high.

The square is surrounded by different buildings. On the north side is the National Gallery. At the north-east corner is the St. Martin-in-the-Fields parish church. On the south side Whitehall is situated, on the east is Strand and South Africa House, and on the west - Canada House.Also there are two beautiful and bright fountains are situated.

Nowadays Trafalgar Square is the meeting place for many people. Every tourist who visit London come to the square. There is a tradition to celebrate holidays such as New Year and Christmas here. One of the most interesting traditions is A Norway Spruce. the people of Norway send a gift of an enormous Christmas Tree to Britain, which is erected in Trafalgar Square.

Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus is a famous road junction and public space of London's West Endin the City of Westminster. It was built in 1819. The Circus was created by John Nash. The Circus is close to major shopping and entertainment areas in the heart of the West End.

At the center of the Circus stands the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain. It was built in 1893 to commemorate Lord Shaftesbury, a philanthropist known for his support of the poor.
The Circus is particularly known for its video display and neon signs mounted on the corner building on the northern side.

The name 'Piccadilly' originates from a 17th century frilled collar named piccadil. Roger Baker, a tailor who became rich making piccadils lived in the area. The word 'Circus' refers to the roundabout around which the traffic circulated.

On the south side of Piccadilly Circus stands Criterion Theatre, on the north - London Pavilion. And today Piccadilly Circus is a favorite place for people to congregate before going to the nearby shopping and entertainment areas. Soho, Chinatown, Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square are all within walking distance.

Hyde Park

Hyde Park is one of the most popular places in London. It is one of the largest parks in central London, England and one of the Royal Parks of London, famous for its Speakers' Corner. The territory of park (total area is 1.4 square km) is divided in two parts by the Serpentine lake.
Under Henry VIII it became a deer park. In the 17th cent there were held races. In 1730, Queen Caroline constructed there an artificial lake.

The park is also famous as a traditional location for mass demonstrations.
The park was the site of The Great Exhibition of 1851, for which the Crystal Palace was designed by Joseph Paxton.
In 1994 the park was added by a rose garden.

This park is a nice place to spend free time. Park sites of interest include Speakers' Corner, Diana, Princess of Wales memorial, Holocaust Memorial, botanical curiosity (Weeping Beech).
Opposite Hyde Park Corner stands one of the grandest hotels in London, The Lanesborough.
Also Hyde Park was the place for some famous rock concerts.
People come here to relax, to walk, for public speaking and other things. And Hyde Park is one of the symbols of UK.

Oxford Street is one of the most popular streets in London. It’s famous for large quantity of shops. During its existence it has had different names (Tyburn Road, Uxbridge Road and Worcester Road) until it became Oxford Street. The street begins from Marble Arch at the north east corner of Hyde Park, through Oxford Circus to St Giles' Circus.

There are 548 shops in Oxford Street, it is Europe's busiest shopping street. This street is home to major department stores. Here you can find a lot of different famous brands, such as Moss Bros, Selfridges, John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, H&M, Zara, Adidas, Nike Wallis, Gap, Mexx and many others.

Each Christmas the street is decorated with bright festive lights. Every year the lights are turned on by a celebrity and they last until January 6.

Big Ben is the name of the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. A clock tower was built at Westminster in 1288 and the clock first ticking was on 31 May 1859. Big Ben is the biggest four-faced, chiming clock in the world. The clock is famous for its reliability.

A survey of 2,000 people was conducted in 2008 that came up with conclusion that the tower was the most popular landmark in the United Kingdom. It was designed by Charles Barry. The tower is 96.3 metres high. Nowadays the Tower leans slightly towards northwest by 220 millimetres.

The bell of 'Big Ben' weighs 16.3 tonnes. The bell of Clock Tower did not stop working even during World War 2. At the base of each clock face is a Latin inscription, in gilt letters. It reads - DOMINE SALVAM FAC REGINAM NOSTRAM VICTORIAM PRIMAM, which means "O Lord, keep safe our Queen Victoria the First".
On 5th of August in 1976 there was the first and only major breakdown - the speed regulator of the chiming mechanism broke.

On 29 of October in 2005 he mechanism was stopped for about 33 hours.
It celebrated its 150th anniversary in May 2009. The Clock Tower is a focus of New Year celebrations in the United Kingdom, with radio and TV stations tuning to its chimes to welcome the start of the year. The clock has become a symbol of the United Kingdom and London, particularly in the visual media.

London Eye

The London Eye (sometimes called Merlin Entertainments London Eye) is an extremely large passenger-carrying Ferris wheel situated on the banks of the River Thames in Central London in the United Kingdom. The London Eye was formally opened by the then Prime Minister Tony Blair on 31 December 1999, but it was closed to the public until March 2000 because of technical problems. Its height is 135 metres (equivalent to 64 red telephone boxes piled on top of each other) and it is the largest Ferris wheel in Europe. From its top you can see the territory around 40 km. The London Eye welcomes an average of 3.5 million customers every year. You would need 6,680 fully booked British Airways Boeing 747-400 jumbo jets to move that number of fliers! It can carry 800 passengers per revolution (25 passengers per each capsule) - equivalent to 11 London red doubled-decker buses. Each of the 32 capsules weighs 10 tones. To put that figure into perspective, it's the same weight as 1,052,631 pound coins. Each rotation takes about 30 minutes, meaning a capsule travels at a stately 26cm per second, or 0.9km per hour.

Stonehenge doesn’t need introducing. It’s a world famous prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire, about 3.2 kilometres west of Amesbury, 13 kilometres north of Salisbury and 137 kilometers Southwest of London. It has a very old history. And many people have different opinion about its appearing.

The origins of the name Stonehenge is taken from the combination of 'stone' and 'henge', a tribute to the biggest henge in Britain. Though there is no specific evidence about who built the Stonehenge. It is believed that Druids, Greeks, or Atlanteans might have built the Stonehenge. Stonehenge was constructed somewhere between 3100 – 1100 BCE. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust. The circle was aligned with the midsummer sunrise, the midwinter sunset, and the most southerly rising and northerly setting of the moon. The stones of Stonehenge were placed in such a way that they increase in size towards the centre and alternate in shape between tall, thin pillar-like stones and stones of a tapering obelisk shape. Stonehenge is the most well known among the nine hundred stone rings which exists in the British Isles. Most archaeologists believed that Stonehenge’s use had been limited to the ritual activities of different Neolithic chiefdoms before 1950. However, its use as an astronomical observatory was an equally important function of the Stonehenge. Nowadays millions of tourists visit Stonehenge every day. They can watch it walking paths round in a distance, because it is surrounded by the barrier.

Bournemouth Eye is an air balloon located in Bournemouth in UK. It is a spherical helium-filled balloon with an enclosed gondola that carries up to 30 passengers. The average ride time for the Balloon is 12 to 15 minutes. It lifts to a height of 500 feet (150 m) while providing a panoramic view of the English Channel and surrounding area—over 20 miles (32 km)—from the highest public observation point in Bournemouth.
